Why School Doors Need Regular Attention

Few buildings are harder on doors than a school. Hundreds of students pass through the same openings several times a day, gym and cafeteria doors get pushed open at a run, and exterior doors are propped, slammed, and exposed to weather. Hardware that would last many years in an office can loosen or wear out much sooner in a school.

At the same time, school doors carry more responsibility than most. Exterior doors have to latch and lock reliably. Classroom doors need to lock quickly and predictably. Corridor and stairwell doors are often fire-rated and must close and latch on their own. Keeping all of that working is routine maintenance, and it is what we do.

Services for Schools and Educational Facilities

Classroom and office door locks

We repair, replace, and install classroom, office, and storage room locks, including classroom-function locks that can be locked from inside the room. See commercial lock repair and commercial lock installation.

Panic bars and exit devices

Gymnasiums, cafeterias, auditoriums, and exterior exits rely on panic hardware that takes heavy use. We provide panic bar and exit device repair and installation for bars that stick, will not latch, or have come loose.

Hollow metal and FRP doors

Steel doors and frames handle most classroom, corridor, and exterior openings; see hollow metal doors and frames. For locker rooms, restrooms, kitchens, and pool areas, fiberglass and FRP doors resist moisture and cleaning chemicals better than steel.

Fire-rated corridor and stairwell doors

We install, replace, and repair fire-rated doors and the closers and latches that let them self-close, and we work on sound-rated doors for music rooms and auditoriums.

Access control and visitor entry

Many schools now control the main entrance with a card reader for staff and an intercom or video intercom for visitors. We install and service these access control systems, along with the electric strikes, magnetic locks, and electrified exit devices that release the door.

Master key systems and rekeying

A well-planned master key system gives teachers, administrators, and custodial staff the access each role needs with fewer keys. We also provide rekeying when keys are lost or staff change, and restricted keys that cannot be copied without authorization.

Automatic operators and accessibility upgrades

We install low-energy operators and push plates on main entrances and carry out other accessibility-related door upgrades, such as lever hardware and closer adjustment, so doors are easier for students, staff, and visitors to use.

Door closers, hinges, and general repair

Slamming doors, doors that will not latch, sagging doors, and worn hinges are the most common school service calls. See door closer repair and commercial door repair.

Door Security Priorities for Schools

When we walk a school building, these are the items we look at first:

  • Exterior doors that latch every time A door that does not close and latch on its own is the most common security gap, and usually comes down to the closer, the hinges or pivots, or the strike.
  • A controlled main entrance One entry point for visitors, with staff credentials on the other exterior doors.
  • Classroom locks that staff can operate quickly Consistent lock functions from room to room, with keys that work.
  • Key control Knowing how many keys exist and who holds them, and rekeying when that is no longer clear.
  • Exit devices that work freely Security hardware must never prevent people from getting out.

We provide the door and hardware work. Decisions about a school’s overall safety plan and code requirements rest with the school, its safety consultants, and the local authorities.

Colleges and Universities

Campus buildings bring their own mix of openings: residence halls with card access and many keyed rooms, laboratories and research areas that need restricted keys or audited access, lecture halls and arenas with banks of exit doors, and libraries and student centers with automatic entrances. We service individual buildings for facilities departments and property managers, and we can extend a grand master key system or access control hardware across several buildings as needs grow.

Scheduling Around the School Day

We schedule non-urgent work before or after classes, on weekends, and during school breaks, and we group repairs so several doors are handled in one visit. Larger projects such as door replacements, a building-wide rekey, or new access control are well suited to summer and winter breaks. Our service hours are 7 AM to 10 PM, seven days a week. For a door that will not lock or close, call and we will prioritize it within those hours.

What We Do and What We Do Not Do

We install, replace, and repair doors, frames, locks, exit devices, closers, operators, and access control hardware. We do not perform official fire-door inspections or certification, and we do not certify ADA compliance. If an inspection report lists door or hardware deficiencies, we can carry out those repairs.

Serving Schools in Washington DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia

Our main service area is Washington DC, and we also serve schools and campuses in nearby Maryland and Northern Virginia. We work with government facilities, office buildings, healthcare facilities, and commercial properties across the same area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you work outside school hours?

Yes. We schedule work before or after classes, on weekends, and during school breaks, within our service hours of 7 AM to 10 PM, seven days a week.

Can classroom doors be changed so they lock from inside the room?

Usually, yes. Many existing classroom locks can be replaced with a lock function that lets staff lock the door from inside. We check the door prep and existing hardware and quote the change per door.

A school exterior door will not latch. What is usually wrong?

Most often the closer is worn or out of adjustment, the hinges or pivots have let the door sag, or the strike is misaligned. We find the cause and repair it so the door closes and latches on its own.

Do you install intercom or buzz-in entry for a school main entrance?

Yes. We install audio and video intercom entry with an electric strike or electrified exit device, so office staff can screen visitors and release the door.

Can you rekey a whole school or set up a master key system?

Yes. We rekey whole buildings and design master key systems with levels for teachers, administrators, and custodial staff, using restricted keys where needed.

Do you inspect or certify fire doors?

No. We repair, replace, and install fire-rated doors and hardware. Official inspection and certification are done by qualified inspectors.
